Vesa unplugged

New Leaf goalie Vesa Toskala weighed in on a variety of topics during a wide-ranging interview yesterday.

- Why he became a goalie: "I started playing hockey at age seven and thought the goalie equipment looked cool."

- Hobbies: "Going to the lake, riding my scooter, hanging with friends. Definitely not golf, which got me teased a bit in California. I also like to shop."

- On his style of play: "I'm not a V-style goalie. I'm not the biggest guy (5-foot-10) so I like to play at the top of the crease and take away the angle."

- Childhood idol: "A Finnish goalie named Jukka Tammi. He never played in the NHL. He was in the Finnish Elite League. I dreamed that one day I would get his job, and I did."

- Career highlight: "My first game in the NHL. It was in Los Angeles. I played the final 12 minutes after (Evgeni Nabokov) was pulled, so there was no time to get nervous. I just looked around and said 'I can't believe I made it to the NHL.' "

- On his potential mask design now that he's a Leaf: "I'll probably stick with the same big skull with teeth."
