Touchy subject

Carlo Colaiacovo and Paul Maurice are not ready to welcome no-touch icing to the NHL quite yet.

But the apparent right leg injury suffered by Colaiacovo in New York Sunday has both calling for the league to modify the enforcement of the rules when players are pursuing the puck during a potential icing situation.

Coalaicovo was chasing down the puck when he appeared to be slew-footed by the Rangers' Petr Prucha.

He hobbled to the bench in obvious discomfort but did return to the game only to aggravate the ailment. He ended up sitting out the entire third period.

Colaiacovo did not dress for last night's game.

"I saw (the Prucha incident) on replay and thought it was pretty dirty," said Colaiacovo, who plans to be in the lineup tomorrow against the New York Islanders.

"I don't mind the (existing rule) but it's obviously a dangerous part of the game."

Maurice feels he has a solution.

"I would think no contact should be allowed when two players are racing for the puck," he said.

Andy Wozniewski took Colaiacovo's place last night.

LOOSE LEAFS

As expected, Leafs general manager John Ferguson Jr. will help Team Canada GM Steve Yzerman pick the roster for the upcoming world hockey championship.

The announcement continued the tradition of the Ferguson family representing Canada on the international hockey front.

John Sr. of course, was part of the Canadian management team during the historic 1972 Summit Series against Russia. He would go on to act as GM of the Canadian entry at a subsequent world championship.

John Jr., meanwhile, had a brief stint as a player with the Canadian national team in 1992, one that included participating in the Deutschland Cup.

"It's an honour to be associated with Hockey Canada in any role," Ferguson Jr. said last night.

Ferguson and Doug Armstrong of the Dallas Stars will aid Yzerman and assistant GM Jacques Martin in the selecting of the roster. Ferguson would prefer none of his Leafs were on the team because that would mean they were still in the playoffs in late April.
