Belak in the club

LANCE HORNBY -- Sun Media

Wade Belak was taken aback by the fallout of his bout with Cam Janssen.

Told that he had made the Tuesday ESPN highlight reel, he replied: "That's huge. I'm up there with the dog show. ESPN doesn't show too many hockey highlights unless they're clubbing somebody (in the Todd Bertuzzi-Chris Simon mode)."

Concussed Tomas Kaberle, the root of all this consternation on March 2 when Janssen sailed halfway across New Jersey to flatten him, did not speak to the media yesterday, except to say he had left the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday before Janssen came over to the Leafs' room to apologize formally.

But Kaberle did express thanks to Belak.

"I saw him in between periods and again this morning and he had a pretty big smile," Belak said.

"Fortunately, I took care of business and everything is back to normal in Leafland."

NO TAXI SQUAD FOR KABBY

Coach Paul Maurice expects Kaberle's return for the first of back-to-back games against Buffalo tomorrow.

Kaberle was one of 15 Leafs at Lakeshore Lions Arena yesterday, with a tuckered Andrew Raycroft and Mats Sundin among those resting. It's expected defenceman Andy Wozniewski (nausea) will play this weekend, while John Pohl (bruised clavicle) was on the ice yesterday.

LOOSE LEAFS

Asked if he ever saw a fight as long as the 95-second bout between Belak and Janssen, winger Jeff O'Neill recalled his rookie year with Hartford. "Our fourth line was Kelly Chase, Stu Grimson and Mark Janssens. Those guys usually got into a fight every game, usually some long ones." ... With a one-goal lead and Martin Brodeur pulled, Maurice chose Sundin over NHL faceoff leader Yanic Perreault for a draw against Scott Gomez in the Leafs end. He reasoned the captain was having a great night in the dots and that if he lost, he or his big wingers would close ranks. Sundin beat Gomez cleanly ... Maurice gave Carlo Colaiacovo a bench lecture after some hair-raising stickhandling on Tuesday, but insisted such mistakes are inevitable with a defenceman who carries the puck as much as the youngster. He said Colaiacovo had matured to the point where he mentally quickly recovers from such episodes.
