Injured defenceman Tomas Kaberle accompanied the team to Washington yesterday and is expected to take the morning skate for tonight's game against the Capitals. But exactly when he will return to the lineup remains a mystery, even to Kaberle.

Kaberle skated for just over 20 minutes at practice yesterday and left the ice not feeling right.

"I had headaches the first couple days. Not now really," Kaberle said after his workout. "But I don't feel myself either. I don't know.

"It's a head injury. I have to be careful."

Until he gives his own medical clearance and gets clearance from doctors after sustaining a concussion, he won't return to the Leafs lineup. But he is expected to take the morning skate tomorrow in Montreal, as well.

SAY WHAT?

Coach Paul Maurice is the first to admit he doesn't have a medical degree. When asked about the result of Kaberle's baseline test, he asked:

"Is there an English translation?"

PLAYERS GET SOME REST

Forward Kyle Wellwood and defenceman Carlo Colaiacovo were both excused from practice yesterday, more to rest soreness than anything else.

This being the time of season when all injuries become state secrets, Maurice said Wellwood's absence had nothing to do with his recovery from abdominal surgery and that he is expected to play tonight. Asked what kind of flu Wellwood might be experiencing, Maurice quipped: "Siberian! As soon as the snow leaves he'll be fine."

RAYCROFT NEARS RECORD

His ability has been questioned. He's been booed off the ice. He has become one of the whipping boys of this year's Maple Leafs. And, goaltender Andrew Raycroft is just five wins from setting a team record for the most wins in a season by a Toronto goalie. Ever.

"I don't completely understand it and hopefully (the fans) will warm up a bit more," Raycroft, who has 32 wins, said yesterday. His predeceasor Ed Belfour had 37 in 2002-03 and Curtis Joseph had 36 in 1999-00.

"I understand that before me there were two Hall of Famers here so they've been spoiled."
