Sundin in another brouhaha

LANCE HORNBY -- Sun Media

Mats Sundin is getting into more feuds with National Hockey League referees than former boss Pat Quinn.

Last night in Montreal it was a non-call on a high stick by Garth Murray that infuriated the captain, causing him to cuss out referees Bill McCreary and Stephane Auger and then blow off reporters for a second time on this trip.

In a 3-2 loss in a shootout to the New York Islanders on Thursday, Sundin felt he was robbed of a goal by Kerry Fraser and did not speak to the media afterward.

"Mats Sundin doesn't take a dive," teammate John Pohl said. "It's just unfortunate that the linesman saw it and the referee didn't."

Murray said he was going for the puck when he clipped Sundin in the dying minutes of the game. But Toronto already had wasted a golden opportunity with a power play at 9:48 of the third after it made it a 5-4 game.

SOUR POWER PLAY

Coach Paul Maurice says the numbers don't lie -- the Leafs' power play isn't working.

The coach is aware that it has clicked just once in four games and is 6-for-52 in the past 13 matches. It has been a month since two power-play goals came in the same game.

"We're off on our power play, it's going in fits and spurts," Maurice said. "We've struggled a little bit gaining the line and controlling the puck. But (Matt) Stajan's line has got better as we've used it more."

WELCOME BACK AUBIN?

With five back-to-back game situations coming up, a break is coming for goalie Andrew Raycroft. But despite a good relief performance last night, Jean-Sebastien Aubin likely won't make his first start since Dec. 29 until Friday in New Jersey against the Devils, with Raycroft coming back against the Buffalo Sabres here Saturday.

WELLWOOD CASE REVIEWED

Centre Kyle Wellwood was to be examined last night by Montreal Canadiens doctor David Mulder, who operated on Wellwood's sports hernia a few weeks ago. "He will be able to tell me where I am (in rehabilitation) and when I can start skating," Wellwood said.
