Change not preferred -- Coach

Three weeks remain until the National Hockey League trading deadline and though plenty can happen in the standings before Feb. 27, Maple Leafs coach Paul Maurice would prefer that general manager John Ferguson watch the deadline come and go.

"I always rather enjoyed not making a lot of changes, and go with what you have," Maurice said. "(There's a possibility) it changes the room to the point that you wonder."

Of course, Maurice might change his tune if the Leafs bottom out. If they continue their climb in the standings, there is little chance Ferguson would deal captain Mats Sundin or winger Darcy Tucker.

SEEING THE OTHER SIDE

Matt Stajan has become a quick study of the business side of the NHL after being elected the Leafs' representative with the NHL Players' Association earlier this season, taking over from Bryan McCabe.

"I've come in at a time when there is a lot of adversity (with the investigation of the hiring of NHLPA head Ted Saskin) and there is a lot more to it than just representing your team," Stajan, 23, said. "I am enjoying learning and I don't mind it. Every player should know what is going on and give their two cents."

PONI RIDES THE WEB

Alexei Ponikarovsky is coming soon to a computer near you.

The Leafs forward is on course to launch his own web site, www.poni23.com, this Friday.

"I've thought about it for a couple of years and I decided to finally do it," Ponikarovsky said. "Fans can get to know me, my background, where I came from, lots of stuff. And they can send me emails and I will write back to them."

STEPPING PAST HORTON

An NHL record held by Tim Horton from his days with the Leafs is on the verge of being broken.

From Feb. 11, 1961, to Feb. 4, 1968, Horton played in 486 consecutive games to set an NHL ironman record for a defenceman.

Colorado Avalanche defenceman Karlis Skrastins is slated to tie the mark tonight against the Florida Panthers.

The 486 games in a row by Horton is a Leafs club record.
