Strong work ethic builds line's fame

As successful as the Bates Battaglia-John Pohl-Boyd Devereaux unit has been over the past few games, the trio still lacks one key ingredient.

A proper name for their line.

"We'll leave it to you guys to come up with one," Battaglia said yesterday.

Whatever you want to call them, coach Paul Maurice has been extremely pleased with their progress since throwing them together recently.

"They are an example of a line being better than the sum of its parts," Maurice said yesterday. "They have been a very pleasant surprise, a line that is based on solid work ethic."

Battaglia and Devereaux are former NHLers who found themselves mired in the minors while Pohl treaded water in the St. Louis Blues system for a number of years.

Under Maurice's guidance with the Marlies a year ago, Pohl and Battaglia became linemates almost from the get go. Devereaux, meanwhile, has nestled in nicely since being called up less than two weeks ago.

"John and I played together all of last year and Devo is a good fit," Battaglia said. "We don't get too many pretty (goals) but we'll take whatever."

Devereaux, who collected a pair of assists in the Maple Leafs' 10-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday, has registered at least one point in all four games he has played with the team.

"I couldn't have asked for a better start," Devereaux said. "We just have to make sure we keep it going.

"As for the name of the line, well, your guess is as good as mine."
