Spengler Cup good to Pogge

Justin Pogge describes his experience representing Canada at the Spengler Cup as "awesome."

As for his gaffe in the final game that led to the winning goal, the Maple Leafs goaltending prospect makes no excuses.

"(Stuff) happens," Pogge said yesterday, just three days after his Canadian team dropped a 3-2 decision to the host Davos squad in the championship game in Switzerland.

"Everyone makes mistakes. Maybe I got a bit too comfortable. You have to get over it."

The play in question happened in the third period with the game tied at 2-2. Pogge went behind the Canadian net to play the puck but whiffed on his clearing attempt, allowing Davos to score a relatively easy goal.

"I just didn't get all of it," he said.

Returning to practice with the Marlies yesterday, Pogge was razzed by teammates for roughing it up with former Leaf Kelly Fairchild during an earlier game in the Spengler tournament.

"They call me a tough guy now," Pogge laughed.

"I had a great time over there. The setting was beautiful, I had the opportunity to represent my country and the hockey was of a very high calibre."

Meanwhile Pogge, like many in this country, was glued to the tube yesterday watching Canada's semi-final shootout win over the U.S. at the world junior hockey championship in Sweden. Just one year ago, Pogge backstopped Canada to the gold medal in Vancouver.

"It was a great game," he said."Carey Price is a great goaltender.

"I actually called Jonathan Toews' first shootout goal. I said low blocker and that's what he did."

Toews and Pogge were teammates with Canada at the world juniors a year ago.

SAYING BYE TO STEVIE Y

Maple Leafs coach Paul Maurice saw firsthand what a warrior Steve Yzerman was during the 2002 Stanley Cup final between Maurice's Hurricanes and Yzerman's Red Wings. "They said he was playing on one leg but he was so good we wondered if it was just another ploy by (then-Wings coach) Scotty Bowman," Maurice said.
