BARRIE -- A former Toronto Maple Leafs great spent some time in the box yesterday -- the prisoner's box.

Dan Maloney, 56, looked haggard as he sat in handcuffs, charged with unlawful entry and failing to comply with a previous bail condition to abstain from alcohol.

He was released on bail and again ordered to steer clear of alcohol.

Details of the evidence heard in court cannot be reported because of a publication ban.

Maloney played for the Leafs from 1978 to 1982, then coached the team from 1984 to 1986. He later coached the Winnipeg Jets.

Maloney previously found himself in court while playing for the Detroit Red Wings.

He was charged with assault after an on-ice attack with his stick against Toronto's Brian Glennie. The charge was dropped in exchange for community service and he was banned from playing in Toronto for two seasons.

Now a real estate agent in Barrie, Maloney is expected back in court Jan. 15.
