Telly to Predators not likely

The presence of Toronto pro scouts Craig Button and Don Granato in Nashville on Saturday for the Predators --Red Wings' game created speculation that the Leafs were going to move third goaltender Mikael Tellqvist to Opryland.

But with the Preds getting Michael Leighton on waivers from Anaheim yesterday, it appears the Leaf duo's visit had another purpose. Toronto general manager John Ferguson did not intend to have Tellqvist stay this long, hoping to trade him for at least a draft pick.

RUSTLING LEAFS

This still is shaping up to be an interesting day on the lineup front, starting with defenceman Jay Harrison, who learns at noon if anyone claimed him during an extended two-day weekend waiver period.

While the Leafs are convinced he can help them in the depth department, it's not known if another team would think as highly of him to pick up his salary.

Defenceman Tomas Kaberle was not on the ice yesterday at Lakeshore Lions Arena.

"He wasn't feeling too fresh," coach Paul Maurice said. "We sent him home, but he should play (tonight).

BEAR NECESSITIES

Maurice says four games against the Bruins this month has given him a good handle on the changes that team made in the off-season, just as a flurry of October matches with the Ottawa Senators provided a window on that division rival.

"(Boston) has a new coach (Dave Lewis), a different style of game, a lot of different players," Maurice noted. "It's getting to know the coaches, too. You know what Guy Carbonneau is going to do based on the past, but there is an unknown with Dave. They didn't go to the wing lock, but now we're starting to see some of what Detroit (Lewis' last team) was really good at, playing well defensively, without anyone really noticing."

LOOSE LEAFS

Winger Chad Kilger turned 30 yesterday. "A quiet night at home," he said of plans to mark the milestone ... A TV reporter asked Maurice his opinion of Tucker prior to coaching him. "This is a family channel and you don't need to hear that," Maurice said. "There are people you don't like whom you've never met and he would've been one of them."
