An MRI on Mats Sundin's right elbow Monday reportedly revealed the Maple Leafs captain has had no setbacks as he continues to recover from the slight ligament tear he suffered in a game Nov. 6 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

A fast healer with nearly every injury he has suffered while he has been a Leaf, Sundin could return Saturday at home against the Boston Bruins. If not then, he could be back in uniform three days after that, when the Leafs again play host to the Bruins.

A RARITY FOR LEAFS

Coach Paul Maurice gave the Maple Leafs yesterday off, with three games in the next four nights on the docket starting tonight in Buffalo against the Sabres.

It's a unique move by Maurice, in that the Leafs almost never had a day off the day before a game under Pat Quinn. Following tonight's game in Buffalo, the Leafs will practise tomorrow in Washington in preparation for a tilt with Alexander Ovechkin and the Capitals on Friday.

The Leafs were 0-2 in Washington last season. Ovechkin, on his way to scoring 52 goals and winning the Calder Trophy, had five goals against Toronto. That tied his high against one team, as he had also had five against Atlanta and Tampa.

STUMPING FOR SUPPORT

The first round of voting has been tabulated for the all-star game Jan. 24 in Dallas and the four Leafs who were on the original ballot aren't doing so hot.

Closest to the lead in a specific category is Tomas Kaberle, who is third in voting among defencemen in the Eastern Conference with 56,139 votes. The Sabres' Brian Campbell leads with 57,988 and Boston's Zdeno Chara is second with 56,939.

Bryan McCabe is fifth with 46,672 votes.

Andrew Raycroft is fifth among goalies with 17,983 votes. Ryan Miller of the Sabres is first with 63,818.

And at forward, Sundin is 11th with 21,076 votes. Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby leads all forwards with 83,664 votes.

Darcy Tucker has 5,175 write-in votes.

Through Jan. 2, NHL fans can vote for the Eastern and Western Conference all-star starters. Western Conference results to date will be announced today.
