Plane truth on Kubina

Defenceman Pavel Kubina has said before that he likes kids, having sponsored a ticket giveaway for disadvantaged children while playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

So few Leafs were surprised that he went to the expense of chartering a plane to the Czech Republic when fiancee Andrea gave birth to the couple's first child, a boy, on Thursday.

He made the arrangements without asking for any assistance, financial or otherwise, from the club.

"He did what he thought he had to and made it on time," general manager John Ferguson said.

"We're very happy for he and Andrea."

The GM said Kubina would be back in the lineup at his convenience, likely by the game in Boston on Thursday.

NO WORRIES FOR WOZ

The Leafs put injured defenceman Andy Wozniewski at ease yesterday by signing him to a one-year, one-way contract extension for $500,000 US.

Wozniewski was the best Leafs defenceman at camp before badly separating his shoulder three games into the season.

With the deal done, there will be less uncertainty for the 26-year-old in the coming months of rehab.

CHAD VOTES FOR DAD

Chad Kilger will be following the municipal elections closely on Monday. His father Bob is running for mayor of Cornwall. Well known in hockey circles and the political arena, Bob Kilger was an MP in the area from 1988 to 2004.

Chad says he's not thinking of getting into politics as a second career, but got a kick out of a suggestion that he put a "Vote For Kilger" sticker on his helmet tonight.

LOOSE LEAFS

Goalie Mikael Tellqvist has lingering problems with a fractured finger, thus J.F. Racine will back up J.S. Aubin tonight. The Marlies have called up goalie Todd Ford and forward Alex Foster from Pensacola ... Coach Paul Maurice was pumped to participate in his first Hall of Fame Game tonight. "Montreal and Toronto on Remembrance Day -- one of the many things I've enjoyed about this job is being part of these kind of events," Maurice said. "I'm not too jaded yet."
