Maple Leafs goalie Andrew Raycroft was honoured by the NHL as the second of three stars of the week for his 3-0 performance between Oct. 30 and Nov. 4.

He had a 1.67 goals-against average in helping defeat the Atlanta Thrashers, Tampa Bay Lightning and most impressive of all, the league-leading Buffalo Sabres. Raycroft, trying to make a comeback this season after losing his starting job in Boston, kept a level head when informed of the award.

"The team played well this week," he said. "(The award) doesn't matter. The week would have been the same if I had been the 50th star of the week.

"Don't get me wrong. It's a nice honour. It's cool to be recognized but it doesn't mean anything. It's just six days out of the season, but a new week starts now."

ROYAL TREATMENT

Philadelphia Flyers' Peter Forsberg has had his likeness on a postage stamp in Sweden, but Mats Sundin did his countryman one better this past summer.

Sundin was given a medal by the King of Sweden, Carl XVI, for his part in the country's gold medal win at the Turin Olympics. The honour included an audience with the royal family at their palace in the oldest part of Stockholm.

"It's a nice place, about 700 rooms," Sundin recalled with a laugh. "It was quite something to be involved in, a memory I'll appreciate a lot after I'm retired."

LOOSE LEAFS

Injured defenceman Pavel Kubina will be back Thursday against the Boston Bruins. He had minor knee surgery after a freak collision with Todd Bertuzzi of the Panthers on Oct. 9. "I met with the coaches and doctors Sunday and it was decided 100% I will return Thursday," Kubina said ... The Leafs went into last night's game having allowed just two power-play goals in the past six games (30 of 32). Coach Paul Maurice was quick to credit centre Michael Peca and the defensive tandem of Ian White and Hal Gill, but saved his best praise for Raycroft. "Ultimately, penalty killing is an indicator how well your goaltender is playing," Maurice said.
