Wellwood fan club growing

Kyle Wellwood had no idea of the high praise heaped his way by Hockey Night In Canada's Don Cherry Saturday night.

"How would I know about it?" Wellwood said yesterday. "News doesn't travel very fast for me.

"I don't even own a TV. What do I need one of those for?"

For one thing, having a tube might give him the opportunity to watch replays of all the highlight reel moves he has sewn together this season.

Two from Saturday's 4-1 win over Buffalo come to mind.

The first came occurred when he narrowly avoided the oncoming check of Jaroslav Spacek, leaving the Sabres defenceman taking the brunt of the impact.

The second came when he hopped out of the path of Mats Sundin's cross-ice pass to Darcy Tucker, who drained a two-foot putt for the eventual winning goal.

"I was doing so many loops and not getting any passes, I knew it wasn't intended for me," he said. "So I got out of the way."

Coach Paul Maurice can only shake his head at times in admiration of Wellwood's shifty skills.

"He does things that you can only marvel at," Maurice said. "He does it at practice too. He's so much fun to watch.

"Even getting out of the way of that hit. He must have incredible peripheral vision. Everyone on the bench was calling for that one but he saw it even before we called it."

Those are the type of plays that left Cherry gushing about Wellwood after the game.

"It's nice to hear someone respectful like that say good things about you," Wellwood said of Cherry.
