McCabe cuts up 'ridiculous' ACC ice

An animated Bryan McCabe had a moment of rink rage yesterday, referring to the ice conditions at the Air Canada Centre as "ridiculous."

Just one day after it appeared injured defenceman Pavel Kubina may have caught his skate in one of the many ruts sprinkled throughout the rink, McCabe refused to mince his words while ripping the playing surface at the Maple Leafs' home arena.

"I know they have worked very hard to try to get it better, but it's a shame that you have to play on stuff like that, especially in a hockey city like Toronto," McCabe said last night.

"It's ridiculous, especially when you think that we have to play 41 times a year on that (crap). It's not an excuse because both teams have to play on it. It just makes it difficult."

While McCabe is sympathetic with those whose job it is to spruce up the playing surface he is fearful that a lack of significant improvement could lead to more injuries.

"It's sad, because this is Toronto," he said. "I just don't want to see guys get hurt.

"I know it's a multi-purpose facility and understand the problems that poses but there are many rinks like that around the league. It shouldn't be this bad."
