Contract extension? Don't ask Sundin

Mats Sundin is entering the final year of his contract with the Maple Leafs but his mind is not on negotiating an extension.

"I haven't even thought about it,"Sundin said. "I'm just worried about playing. I know it is a cliche, but it is a new season for us and I am at the stage of my career where it is one year at a time anyway."

The Leafs hold a team option for 2007-08 for Sundin, who emphasized yesterday he was not thinking of being traded or retiring when he put his home up for sale in the spring. When that became public, speculation went into overdrive.

"I heard about it," he said. "I don't know where that comes from. I never made any plans about a change. I love being in Toronto and was looking to make change in where I was living. That's all it was."

Missing the playoffs did bother Sundin through the summer.

"It was hard," Sundin said of the early start to summer. "But once you get distanced from last season there were a lot of positives. I like the way we played in the final 30 games and how a lot of younger players played. We had almost the same amount of points as Edmonton and went to the final. That's how close it was."
