John Ferguson admits he is not through kicking tires in order to augment the Maple Leafs roster, especially in the forward ranks.
But the general manager figures the most likely avenue would be through a trade, since the Leafs have little wiggle room remaining under the league's $44-million US salary cap.
Ferguson said he has talked to Scarborough native Anson Carter, an unrestricted free agent, but suggested the price might be too high.
"We are satisfied with the 23 guys we would take to camp right now but that won't stop us from looking,"he said.
Ferguson also confirmed he discussed the Marlies coaching job with former Los Angeles Kings coach Andy Murray.
