Pat Quinn may not be wanted by the Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment Ltd. board, but he is more than welcome in the halls of academia.

McMaster University in Hamilton will bestow an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on the one-time Maple Leafs coach June 8 at its convocation ceremony.

Quinn joins Man in Motion pioneer Rick Hansen, former Leafs great Syl Apps and Olympic rowing star Silken Laumann as athletes honoured by the school.

"Pat Quinn is a Hamilton boy who has had a distinguished coaching career," McMaster spokesperson Jane Christmas said.

"His charitable endeavours have been every bit as successful as his hockey ones."

Quinn was fired by the Leafs April 20 after missing the playoffs for the first time in seven years.
