It might not be the smartest way to win over the hearts and minds of Torontonians, but Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel couldn't resist taking a good-natured poke at Leafs fans during his trip to the Big Smoke.

"I did mention that we made the playoffs and they didn't," the proud Oilers fan said in a conference call yesterday afternoon from Toronto. "But I didn't rub it in too much."

Mandel is in Toronto until tomorrow to promote Edmonton as a great place to live, visit and do business.

Since Thursday, he's been meeting with business leaders, media outlets and elected officials in a bid to boost Edmonton's national profile.

Calling it a "really good trip," Mandel said he has noticed Easterners appear more aware of the city's drawing points, which include great economic growth and tremendous opportunity.

However, he said some Torontonians were surprised to learn about Edmonton's soaring population, GDP and economic future.

Mandel, who met with several Toronto-based media outlets, is hopeful that there will be a "new sense of editorial comment from the national media" when it comes to Edmonton.

But the mayor said the trip wasn't about trying to outdo Calgary, which was recently branded the new centre of the universe by Maclean's magazine.

"The fact of the matter is Calgary is a great city and they've done a wonderful job of promoting," Mandel said, adding Edmonton has "a big job to do."
