Renney never is satisfied

A satisfied coach is one doomed for failure so it should come as no shock Tom Renney would like to see his New York Rangers improve in some areas.

The Rangers are 8-1-1 in their past 10 games and have won four in a row but Renney is not completely happy. At one point yesterday in practice, he did not like the way his club was performing defensively.

"Every time you go on the ice, you have a level of performance that is acceptable and one that is not," the Rangers coach told reporters. "We have a big series coming up against Toronto and we have to make sure we are ready."

Nor was Renney thrilled with the eight power plays the visiting Ottawa Senators had on Wednesday night, even though the Sens scored on none of them and lost 5-1.

"As much as we seemed to skate well and we were pretty much on our game, there were times that we didn't (move our feet)," Renney said. "Down the stretch and hopefully into the playoffs, that could be the penalty that sends you packing."

IT'S FINE WITH WOZ

Defenceman Andy Wozniewski knows he could wind up with the Toronto Marlies for the Olympic break but has no problem with that.

"I am comfortable with whatever they do," Wozniewski said."If I go down, I'll work hard. I look at it as a positive either way."

Wozniewski and fellow rookie Jay Harrison are candidates to join the Marlies during the break. But Staffan Kronwall is not, as players who have played in 16 of the past 20 games can't be sent to the minors for the break. Kronwall has played in the past 18 games.

A trade freeze across the league kicks in today at 3 p.m. and ends Feb. 27 at midnight. The NHL trade deadline is 3 p.m. on March 9.

BRIEFLY

Ed Belfour did not practise yesterday but will start tonight ... Captain Mats Sundin might soon shuck his visor. In the Leafs' past two practices, Sundin did not have a visor attached to his helmet ... The Toronto Marlies signed defenceman Derek Landmesser, who was leading the Central Hockey League in defenceman scoring with 53 points. Landmesser was with Memphis.
