Leaf fans say Belfour, Quinn should get the boot

There's nothing like an eight-game losing streak to bring out the worst in Leaf fans.

But even Montreal Canadiens fans were calling for Quinn's head after the Habs' 4-3 OT victory over the Buds last night.

"It's time to fire Quinn," said Montreal fan Brian Butt, 45, who travelled from Newfoundland with friend and Leafs fan Bill Gillingham, 42, for last night's game.

But Gillingham wasn't about to hear it.

"Pat Quinn is the most winningest coach in the NHL because he knows what he's doing -- so why get rid of Pat?" Gillingham said after the game, adding the problem is that captain Mats Sundin needs a solid linemate. "They need to have somebody with Mats Sundin."

Gillingham's opinion was the opposite of other die-hard fans at the game last night.

"Personally, change the coach," said life-long Leaf fan Ron Strathdee, 36, at the game at the Air Canada Centre. "Fire Pat Quinn. It's time for a change of scenery."

Strathdee, who lives in Mississauga, said the current coach of the Leafs' farm team, Paul Maurice from the Toronto Marlies, would be a good replacement for Quinn.

"I think the players have tuned Pat Quinn out," Strathdee said.

Other Leafs' fans echoed the call for a house-cleaning -- even as the Leafs led the Habs 2-1 after two periods.

"I think Pat Quinn has overran his stay here," said Stew Chezzi, 47, of Sudbury who drove five hours to catch last night's game.

Fan Peter Phillips, 46, doubted Quinn's abilities and said goalie Eddie Belfour also needs to go.

"Eddie, God knows I love him, but it's time for him to go," he said.
