Allison tired of rumours

Jason Allison knew scrutiny and speculation would be part of the deal when he signed with the Maple Leafs last summer, but he has been taken aback by the recent rumours that have his name linked with the Boston Bruins.

"There are so many trade rumours here, it's unbelievable," he said. "The media thinks we need (defencemen) and then they come up with a few names, and they come up with a few the other way and think it is a story.

"I'm sure (general manager John Ferguson) didn't go up to anyone in the media and say they are trying to move me. If you have played here five years, there have probably been 100 rumours during that time. Trade rumours do not mean anything to me."

Allison going to the Bruins for defenceman Brian Leetch has been bandied about, but whether there is any substance to it is another matter.

DOESN'T REALLY MATTER

Daniel Alfredsson did not agree with the suggestion the Ottawa Senators would have to beat the Leafs in the playoffs to completely excise the Toronto ghosts.

"If we play them, fine, it would not bother me," he said. "It would be nice to beat them in a playoff round, but if we beat them and then lose in the second round, who cares? It does not matter who we meet, to be honest. I would not mind playing them, but I am not saying I want to play the Leafs."

The Leafs have eliminated the Senators the past four post-seasons.

PROUD OF PAPA

The Phoenix Coyotes recognized Thomas Steen prior to their game last night against the Edmonton Oilers and give him a spot in their Ring of Honor at Glendale Arena.

Steen's No. 25 -- retired by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995 -- officially joined Wayne Gretzky's No. 99 and Bobby Hull's No. 9 on the ring.

Steen played his entire 14-year career for the Jets, who departed Winnipeg for Phoenix in 1996.

"I am very proud of my dad and the things he accomplished," Leafs rookie Alex Steen said. "It's nice to see he is being honured again. It will be nice to go down there and play (one day) and see the banner."
