Sundin sticking with visor

Mats Sundin is not about to shuck his visor.

"I think it's going to stay on," Sundin said. "Until my left eye is absolutely 100%, I want to make sure I protect the vision. I will keep it on now, for sure."

Sundin has been wearing a visor since Nov. 5, when he returned from the injury suffered in the season opener. He had his eye examined on Wednesday and said the only trouble he now has with his vision is when he is reading.

"I don't have any problem skating or playing," Sundin said. "(The vision) is almost back to where it was and it feels great."

FIRING FUSS

Maple Leafs coach Pat Quinn was not thrilled that Ed Olczyk was fired by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"There's this thinking out there that coaches are hired to be fired," Quinn said. "I don't buy that for a minute. Eddie Olczyk certainly didn't take on his job to have that happen.

"It seems to me they had a lot of adversity in a lot of ways and a lot of injuries to their key guys. It seems like he drew the short straw."

One unique situation facing Olczyk was having the club's owner, Mario Lemieux, play for him. The thinking among observers is the Penguins won't have success until an alleged country-club atmosphere is wiped out of the dressing room.

NOT SO FAST

Matt Stajan did not concur with the idea the Leafs are slower than some of their opponents and therefore have trouble beating them.

"It's all about positioning," Stajan said. "If you are in the right position, you are supporting the puck and you don't give the odd-man rushes. The puck movement, the transition, it's speed too, and it is not all skating."

MORE MARIUSZ

Mariusz Czerkawski has done nothing in the seven games he has appeared in this season to give the coaching staff much confidence, but he could be back in tomorrow against the Ottawa Senators given the Leafs' injury woes.

"It's very likely he will get that chance again," Quinn said. "Then maybe his game is such that I won't want to take him out again."

Czerkawski has one assist and is minus-2.
