Dog-gone good game for Eddie

Ed Belfour relished the moment.

Informed yesterday that TV cameras caught him munching on an arena frank while sitting on the bench in Boston Thursday, the Maple Leafs goaltender decided to spill the beans concerning his impromptu Beantown buffet.

"There were a couple of fans behind the bench and they wanted to buy me a hot dog. So I said 'ketchup on the hot dog,' " recalled Belfour, who was backing up Mikael Tellqvist at the time.

"I didn't think he was going to do it but he did."

With the help of Maple Leafs equipment man Scotty McKay, dinner soon was served.

"It has never happened to me before," Belfour said. "Everyone around there thought it was pretty comical."

Was the dog as tasty as those famous Fenway franks, a trademark fare at Boston Red Sox games?

"It was pretty good. I didn't eat the whole thing right there but I had a bite anyway."

Coach Pat Quinn did not know about the incident until he was told by broadcaster Harry Neale after the game.

"I've heard a lot of stories about stuff happening on the bench but this is a first," said Quinn with a laugh.
