McCabe has some power

With two goals last night against the New York Rangers, Bryan McCabe is a third of the way to the club record for power-play goals in a season and has a shot at Doug Gilmour's club power-play points record, too.

Wendel Clark and Dave Andreychuk hold the goals record with 21 each in 1993-94, while Gilmour had 59 points in 1993-94, 14 goals and 45 assists. McCabe has 10 assists thus far. Coach Pat Quinn praised both McCabe's shot and his harmony with defence partner Tomas Kaberle.

"(McCabe) puts it just high enough, just over the pads so that it gets by the goaltenders who like to butterfly a lot," Quinn said. "That has been a real strength of his since he joined our team. He has had a hot stick and he feels god about himself.

"Not everyone can do what he and Tom do, set it up to where the players say it's in the wheelhouse."

But Quinn said McCabe's winning goal last night was made possible by an outstanding hit by Alex Steen, who rocked New York's Steve Rucchin and got the puck back to Kaberle.

"To me that was awesome, knocking a big man off the puck," Quinn said. "Hopefully, that's something we get more of, knocking it off the puck instead of trying to hook him off the puck. That was the reason we scored that goal."

BORSCHEVSKY BEHIND BENCH

Another ex-Leaf is starting in the coaching ranks. Nik Borschevsky, who scored the famous Game 7 overtime goal against the Detroit Red Wings in 1993, is running Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, a second-division team in Russia.

As for other Leafs alumni: Mike Kitchen (St. Louis) and Ed Olczyk (Pittsburgh) are in last place in their respective divisions, while Joel Quenneville (Colorado), Ron Wilson (San Jose) and former Leafs' farm team coach Marc Crawford (Vancouver) join Pat Quinn with records above .500.

ALLISON A ROAD WARRIOR

If the Maple Leafs really are shopping forward Jason Allison, NHL pro scouts would be wise to watch him exclusively on the road. Before last night, Allison was scoreless with seven assists and a minus-eight in 10 games at the Air Canada Centre, while tabulating three goals and six assists in eight road contests, and a plus-two.
