Goodbye, ball cap and track suit. Hello, shin pads, helmet and visor.

During a visit to thrilled students at Kimberly Public School yesterday, Leafs captain Mats Sundin told media in attendance that he is ready to take the next step in his rehab process.

Sundin is poised in the coming days to begin skating in full equipment, albeit without his teammates on the ice. To this point he has been skating alone in casual training garb.

Sundin, whose healing left eye will be re-examined by doctors next week, was asked if any delegates from the Swedish Olympic team have been in contact.

"No. And its not really in my concern either,"he said. "The No. 1 priority is that I get back into game shape.

"The Toronto Maple Leafs are my top concern."

Sundin and fellow Swede Alex Steen were at Kimberly P.S. to help launch the 2005-06 TDWaterhouse Leafs @ School program, a popular web-based educational program aimed at making learning fun for students in grades four to six.

What was the most difficult question asked of Sundin by the room of adoring kids?

"What's your favourite cup cake?" Sundin recounted."How do you answer that?"

For the record, his response was "chocolate."

Telly to play?

Leafs coach Pat Quinn revealed yesterday that Mikael Tellqvist likely will get the call in goal either tomorrow in Boston against the Boston Bruins or Saturday at home versus the Ottawa Senators. Incumbent Ed Belfour usually opts to play when the Hockey Night in Canada cameras are in the house, so perhaps Tellqvist will face the Bruins.

Shootout success

Sundin was one of the more nervous people in the house during the Leafs-Boston Bruins shootout Monday, a game won by Toronto 5-4 on an Eric LIndros goal.

"I think guys will become more comfortable with (the format) as the season goes on," said Sundin, who will be one of the Leafs three shootout competitors whenever he returns to the lineup.

"I would think the best thing to do is shoot. Then again,Eric scored on a nice deke."
