Bryan McCabe has made the Canadian men's hockey Olympic team. Not quite, but early next week he will be one step closer.

Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson confirmed yesterday the name of the Maple Leafs defenceman will be on the early roster the organization has to submit to the IIHFand the IOC by Monday.

"Oh yeah, definitely," said Nicholson, in Brampton yesterday for an announcement regarding the 2006 Royal Bank Cup. "Bryan has been so close and he has been so good to Hockey Canada."

McCabe, named the NHL's defensive player of the week for last week, leads the Leafs in scoring with nine points in six games.

"(The Olympics) are not even on my mind," McCabe, unaware of Nicholson's comments, said after practice yesterday.

"That's a long way away."

McCabe, who won two gold medals with Canada at the world junior, was not at the summer camp in B.C. Nicholson said all 37 players who were at camp will be on the preliminary list for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

"There will be a lot more players added," he said.

"There have been some real good surprises for us, and we we want to make sure we don't miss anyone."

Nicholson estimated 60-65 players will be on the preliminary roster. From that, a final roster of 23 will be announced prior to the deadline of Dec. 22, likely in mid-December.
