LANCE HORNBY -- Toronto Sun

Coach Pat Quinn confirmed yesterday that right winger Jeff O'Neill's right shoulder is only bruised, after fears that his heavy collision into the Ottawa net on Wednesday had aggravated the torn labrum that was operated on in March of 2004.

What isn't clear is whether O'Neill can make it back in time for tomorrow's game in Ottawa.

"He's day-to-day," Quinn said. "Nothing showed up (on x-rays)."

With O'Neill and Mats Sundin out and both Ken Klee and Wade Belak ready to go last night, Andy Wozniewski was the only other change from the season opener.

TELLQVIST ON DECK

Mikael Tellqvist's mustard-coloured goal pads are a thing of the past as his new blue wickets arrived yesterday. He might get a chance to use them this week.

"It's possible," Quinn said. "We'll just communicate with (Ed Belfour) and see where he is. We do two back-to-backs this week (tomorrow in Ottawa and back here to face the Flyers and then Friday -- Saturday on the road versus Atlanta and Montreal), so it's very likely Tellqvist will be in for one or two."

PARDON MY FRENCH

Chad Kilger was a diligent student when it came to learning French, a language skill that's come in handy growing up in Cornwall, near the Quebec border and later playing with the Canadiens for four seasons.

The large contingent of Quebec media certainly appreciated Kilger yesterday as Toronto has no French speaking players.

"I'd gotten away from it in high school, but on a day like this you start to remember the terminology," Kilger said. "I speak in broken French, but I understand the questions I'm asked."

CHICAGO WOZ SOX

The Leafs used to be a Boston Red Sox room when Beantowner Tom Fitzgerald was here, but that changed when Andy Wozniewski arrived.

"I hate Boston," the Buffalo Grove, Illinois native declared the day after watching his hometown team dispose of the Red Sox in three straight. "My parents grew up White Sox fans and I like the Sox and the Cubs. We'll see what happens in the next series."
