Staffan Kronwall didn't have to step out of his way to make a big impression at training camp yesterday -- he simply stepped into Eric Lindros.

Observers were buzzing after Kronwall, a 6-foot-3, 209-pound defenceman, nailed the 6-foot-4, 240-pound Lindros against the side boards during a scrimmage. Lindros tried to hit Kronwall later in the game but was impeded by Bryan Marchment.

"I held back a bit," Kronwall said. "I think it was a clean hit, maybe not the best guy to hit. You have to step up for yourself. You have to show some respect here and I hope Eric does not feel bad about it."

Strangely, the other big check yesterday saw Bryan McCabe take a piece out of Tie Domi.

"It felt great until he slashed me on the back of the leg from behind," McCabe said with a laugh. "You miss the bodychecking and it was good to get one in."

KEANE ON TORONTO?

The Maple Leafs are taking a "wait-and-see" attitude with Mike Keane, the veteran left winger told Sportsnet yesterday. Keane does not want to report to Toronto's camp without a contract and remains in Winnipeg with his family. The Leafs still have interest, but because they are so close to the salary cap and have some decisions to make up front, for the moment Keane is a long shot.
