WINNIPEG - This is not a knee-jerk reaction designed to help the Tampa Bay Lightning make a late push for the playoffs.

Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman fired head coach Guy Boucher on Sunday, just hours before his team was to take on the Winnipeg Jets, citing a need for organizational change at the position.

“I’m not satisfied with the direction our hockey club is going,” Yzerman told reporters at the Fairmont Hotel in Winnipeg. “This isn’t a reaction, a desperate act to try and make the playoffs, although that is still our hope regardless of where we sit in the standings.

“It is done with, not only the short term, but more importantly, the long term of our organization, where we are going and where we want to get to.”

The Lightning entered Sunday’s action with a 13-17-1 record and sat five points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
