Leo Komarov is as blunt as he physical.

“I’m not happy about it, but it’s nothing I care about, either,” Komarov said on Tuesday when he was asked whether he gets pleasure out of driving opponents nuts.

Well, there’s little doubt of the impact Komarov has had for the Maple Leafs, and on players in opposing uniforms, in his first season in the National Hockey League.

As much as the Leafs need Phil Kessel to score goals in the first round of the 2013 Stanley Cup against the Boston Bruins and as much as they need James Reimer to stop the puck, a player of Komarov’s ilk can be just as valuable.

Komarov, the Leafs’ leader in hits during the regular season with 176 and fifth in the NHL overall, often sets the physical tone for a club that led the NHL with 1,626 hits.
