Nobody will call this a cheap shot.

San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson has been fined $100,000 by the NHL for his criticism of the Raffi Torres verdict.

The Sharks winger was suspended for the remainder of San Jose’s second-round series against the Los Angeles Kings after a high hit on Jarret Stoll in the opening game, but Wilson argued Torres didn’t target his head and that the collision didn’t meet the criteria of the often-talked-about Rule 48.

“Although it’s unfortunate that Jarret was injured on the play, we feel this decision is grossly unfair to Raffi, his teammates and our fans,” Wilson said in Friday’s strongly-worded statement.

The $100,000 fine includes an automatic $25,000 punishment for making a formal statement during a 48-hour window after a disciplinary decision, plus an extra $75,000 due to the “inappropriate nature of the comments.”
