PITTSBURGH - It’s become the daily routine at Pittsburgh Penguins practice this season: see who shows up.

The roll call Thursday didn’t include power winger James Neal, who was hobbled in the Penguins’ series-opening 5-0 win against the New York Islanders Wednesday night.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma has taken to saying he won’t give updates on players’ injuries even if he had an any, so Neal’s status for Game 2 Friday night falls into the ‘your guess is as good as mine’ category.

Neal got tangled up with Islanders defenceman Travis Hamonic early in the second period and speculation is he could have an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, recovering from a broken jaw, was on the ice Thursday. He took some reps with the first power-play unit and skated with usual linemates Chris Kunitz and Pascal Dupuis which raised a few eyebrows and no doubt some hopes among Penguins fans for his return.
