PITTSBURGH — The secretive status of Sidney Crosby has an impact far beyond the Penguins and Lightning and their loyal supporters.

In fact, it’s being monitored closely in the heart of the Las Vegas strip and by anyone else who takes a bet.

There have been crazy rumblings that Crosby will suit up for the Penguins as soon as Wednesday’s series opener, which has bookmakers on their toes and with ears to the ground.

In the meantime, many have seen a flood of money on the underdog Lightning making the Pens just a minus-140 favourite (requiring a $140 wager to make a $100 profit.)

“I believe there’s been early Tampa Bay money for good reason considering Sidney Crosby’s status remains largely in flux,” Caesar’s Palace sports analyst Todd Fuhrman said Tuesday from Vegas. “The Penguins enter the playoffs without their two superstars in Crosby and Malkin so the betting public sees value in the dog and jumps on it.

“This is the time of year where star power has a large impact on lines and we’re seeing big-time injuries affecting wagering even before the puck is dropped.”
