PITTSBURGH - The hate mail Eric Gryba received after his tone-setting hit in Round 1 of the playoffs was more sickening than the sight of his victim’s pool of blood.

Lars Eller just had his nose broken and some teeth loosened. Habs fans wanted Gryba to pay with his life.

“On Twitter, it was bad,” the Senators rookie defenceman said Monday. “I had people saying they hope I get cancer. I had people saying ‘you’ll never get out of Montreal alive.’ There was just some really ruthless stuff.”

Gryba puts it all down to the “passionate” fans of the bleu, blanc et rouge. The same type of people exist in Pittsburgh — if not worse — but that won’t scare him into changing his style.

“More people know how to pronounce my name now, which is kind of nice,” Gryba said with a chuckle. “I was never out there trying to hurt anybody. I play physical, and plays like that happen."
