PITTSBURGH - Jason Spezza didn't go along for the ride.

The Senators' top centre practised with the club at Scotiabank Place for the second straight day but when everybody else packed their bags, Spezza stayed behind in Ottawa where he'll skate for the next couple of days with the Black Aces.

He won’t play in Game 1 — and hasn’t been ruled out for Game 2 Friday — but for now he’s not ready to return from back surgery.

“Working with Luke (Richardson) will allow him to get better skates. It will give him a better opportunity to continue to progress,” said coach Paul MacLean.

GM Bryan Murray said jokingly Spezza might have a tough time fitting in after the way Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Kyle Turris played in Round 1.

“We’ll talk. He’ll get a few more skates in. I don’t know how he feels,” said Murray. “If he can come in and play better than a couple of our guys I guess we’d be open to that.

“But he’s got a tough job ahead of him — beating out Pageau, Turris. How do you do that,” added Murray with a smile.
