No miracle for Senators' Jason Spezza
By BRUCE GARRIOCH, QMI Agency
MONTREAL - Don't expect Jason Spezza to make a miracle recovery and heroic return to the Senators anytime soon.
As the Senators prepare for Game 2 of their Round 1 playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens Friday night at the Bell Centre, the club’s top centre didn’t even come along for the playoff ride when Ottawa arrived here Tuesday.
Instead, Spezza, who had surgery to repair a disc in his back on Jan. 31, remained in Ottawa to continue his rehab to try to get back to the point where he’s capable of returning to the club’s lineup this season.
“He’s continuing his process and his rehab, so I’m not sure what that entails today, but he’s in Ottawa, I know that,” said coach Paul MacLean before Game 1 Thursday.
“He’s rehabbing. I’m not sure if he’s skating or he’s just in the gym. He’s having a normal rehab day whatever that requires. I have no idea (if he’s closer).”
When Spezza had the procedure, the hope was he would return in time for the playoffs. His timeline continues to be a mystery, but at this juncture it would be hard to believe he’d play again this season.
