Sens take subtle shots at officiating

The Senators bit their tongues when it came to talking about the men in stripes.

While the officials didn’t do them any favours in Game 4, the Senators clearly weren’t happy with the referees.

“You guys all saw the game. I just think there were some inconsistencies,” said coach Cory Clouston.

“We have to be better at handling adversity, but it seemed like what was being called in one situation wasn’t being called in another.”

Most of the players didn’t want to talk about the officiating.

“I don’t really have a comment,” said Senators winger Chris Neil, who was assessed 16 minutes in penalties. “It just seems like anytime you say anything, you’re digging yourself a hole.”

Still, the Senators weren’t happy that Pittsburgh’s Chris Kunitz wasn’t given a delay of game penalty midway through the third. He put a puck over the glass without it being touched, but there was no call by referees Brad Meier or Brad Watson.

Pittsburgh’s Jordan Staal then scored to complete the scoring for the Penguins, leaving Ottawa winger Peter Regin dumbfounded.

“It was a penalty, for sure. I was right beside it. There were four (officials) out there. One of them should be able to see it,” said Regin.

“I haven’t seen the replay. It went straight out, right? That’s what I thought. Then, the linesman tells me it hit the glass. I’m like, ‘How can you say that hit the glass.’ ”

Said winger Jarkko Ruutu: “I guess I shouldn’t comment about it. I’ve got nothing to say. Everybody sees what’s happening watching the game and they can draw their own conclusions.”
