Ray Emery's wild fashion sense often leaves observers at a loss for words.
Not Lester McLean.
The ESPN Classic manager penned the words and provided the vocals for Fashion Plate, a 3O minute homage to the Senators goaltender's sartorial flair. The catchy tune accompanied a TSN feature on Emery which aired last night.
"I'd seen Ray on (TSN's Off The Record) and talked to him a bit about his style," said McLean, an accomplished singer who fronts the Lester McLean Trio. "He's known for his style throughout the league."
TSN hockey host James Duthie, who put together the feature back in March, has called on McLean to create musical pieces for several features in the past.
"His songs make all the pieces, they really do," said Duthie, an Ottawa native and former CJOH sports anchor. "All I told him was I wanted a song about someone who's half goaltender, half zoolander."
'Goaltender ... Zoolander' ended up being Duthie's contribution to the lyrics: They're the first two words of the song.
Duthie said he decided to explore Emery's fashion sense after receiving a tip from Brent Wallace, TSN's Ottawa reporter. He calls Emery "a unique guy ... one of the most fascinating characters still left in the playoffs."
Emery's closet only contains about 10 suits, "but they're all very, very bold and make a statement," said Duthie. The goaltender also owns 14 watches and 20 pairs of sunglasses.
"If he likes something, he'll wear it," said Duthie. "He doesn't care whether it's fashionable or not. He wants to be different from the crowd.
"The louder, the better."
