Yippy yappy ki-yay

Senators centre Jason Spezza was exchanging gloves to the face with Pittsburgh Penguins winger Gary Roberts when Pens winger Jarkko Ruutu took a swing at Spezza from the bench during Game 3 of their first-round series.

Spezza turned to Ruutu and said, "Take your best shot. This might be your only chance because you won't be out on the ice at the same time as me."

It was a shot at Ruutu's status as a third-line player by Spezza. Not bad.

Players get on each other's nerves in the playoffs and dropping the occasional one-liner on a third-liner is one way to get even.

But Spezza isn't expecting to hear much from New Jersey Devils shadow John Madden.

"The guys who are best at that job are the ones who don't talk, I find," said Spezza. "If you're in that position and you're the offensive guy, you want a guy yapping at you, firing you up a little bit. When a guy just does his job, those guys are probably the best at it. That's what a guy like Johnny Madden tries to do.

"I'm a little bit yippy. I like getting into it with guys, especially the guys who don't talk. You try some reverse psychology on them a little bit."
