PHILADELPHIA - The New Jersey Devils will be missing star forward Ilya Kovalchuk on Tuesday night for Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal against the Philadelphia Flyers.
"We left Ilya Kovalchuk back in New Jersey and he will not be in the lineup and the reason is a lower-body injury and that's all we will say," Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello told reporters at the Devils morning skate at the Wells Fargo Center.
"He is day to day. We'll have no other further comments on Ilya's situation."
A day after failing to register a single shot in the New Jersey Devils 4-3 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1 on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, reporters in Newark were told that Kovalchuk was not available to speak after the team's video session on Monday because he had gone to "therapy."
Now comes word that he won't be able to suit up against the Flyers, who are looking to take a 2-0 stranglehold in the series.
Those who observe the team on a daily basis had suspected that Kovalchuk has been nursing an injury believed to be his lower back, although the Devils sniper, whenever asked about his status throughout the playoffs, has maintained he's been healthy.
