NEW YORK - John Tortorella is known for being short with the media.

But the New York Rangers coach took a couple of minutes Thursday night to defend Rangers forward Brad Richards after Tortorella made the $60-million forward a healthy scratch for New York’s 4-3 overtime win over the Boston Bruins, avoiding a sweep in the NHL Eastern Conference semifinal.

“By no means is this a situation where I take him out and I’m blaming him,” said Tortorella after swapping Richards and Arron Asham with Kris Newbury and Micheal Haley, who played on a revamped fourth line with Derek Dorsett.

“I’m playing Brad on the fourth line and he’s playing seven or eight minutes and it’s not good for him. It doesn’t work playing Brad Richards that way, but I feel some other guys have played better.
