Driving force
Veteran Montreal Gazette beat writer Pat Hickey isn’t shying away from driving to the Wachovia Center after his car was badly vandalized in Game 1 by Flyer fans who also damaged broadcast equipment from another Quebec media outlet. Hickey says he has received about 500 e-mails since the incident, almost all of them apologies.
A fan who posted a picture of Hickey’s Quebec license plate on Facebook was to be questioned by police. Hickey told colleagues he will be driving to Philly again, this time borrowing his wife’s car.
Habs’ true Lav
The Laviolette name has been magic for the Flyers so far in this series, but it’s supposed to be a charm for the Habs.
A founding father and first coach of the Canadiens in 1909-10, Jean-Baptiste ‘Jack’ Laviolette was born July 27, 1879 in Belleville, Ont., and played nine seasons for the team before serving as GM coach in their first season in the old National Hockey Association. Laviolette signed future Hall of Famers Newsy Lalonde, Didier Pitre and the “Chicoutimi Cucumber” Georges Vezina.
Peter Laviolette, the Massachusetts-born coach of the rival Flyers, is presumably no relation.
