The clock is close to striking midnight for the Detroit Red Wings.
It's ticking quickly in that direction, and total darkness for the Wings could come on Wednesday night in Chicago in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinal against the Blackhawks.
The Hawks are heading home with the momentum after a 4-3 victory at Joe Louis Arena on Monday evening, forcing a deciding game at the United Center.
The Wings, in short, fell apart in the third period of Game 6. Holding a 2-1 lead, they stood and watched as Michal Handzus tied the game. They couldn't control the puck a few minutes later, and Bryan Bickell shrugged off Brendan Smith to slide the puck behind goalie Jimmy Howard.
Michael Frolik was awarded a penalty shot at 9:43 after a tap on his gloves by Carlo Colaiacovo during a breakaway caused Frolik to lose the puck. Was it a bit of a chintzy call? Perhaps. But the infraction kept Frolik from getting a shot on goal.
