Wings centre Damien Brunner says Oilers head coach Ralph Krueger got the Swiss national team to the quarter finals at world competitions on a regular basis, and made people believe the team could take the next step. (QMI Agency)

Damien Brunner lost a few bets Sunday with Switzerland’s deafeat in the final of the World Hockey Championships.

But the Detroit Red Wings centre was still proud of his countrymen’s accomplishments and credits Edmonton Oilers head coach Ralph Krueger with helping pave the way for their silver-medal performance.

Prior to working for the Oilers, Krueger was head of the Swiss national team program.

“With Krueger we got pretty consistent making the quarterfinals, he did a great job,” Brunner said, Monday, prior to Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinal against the Chicago Blackhawks. “For Switzerland he made them believe we could take the next step. Then when he left, Sean Simpson took over and he’s been able to take the next step by winning a quarterfinal and winning a semifinal. But Ralph Krueger did a great job over the time he was there.”

Switzerland had their magical run at this year’s tournament ended by Sweden, who claimed the world title with a 5-1 vi
