The Chicago Blackhawks were expecting a better effort from the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday and got it.

In turn, they now have a tougher series on their hands as the Red Wings pulled out a 4-1 win at the United Center to tie the best-of-seven NHL Western Conference semifinal 1-1.

Damien Brunner, Brendan Smith, Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppula scored for the Red Wings, while Patrick Kane countered for the Blackhawks.

Jimmy Howard turned away 19 shots in the win, while Corey Crawford finished with 26 saves.
