Bruins hope to avenge sour Grapes

MONTREAL -- If Patrice Bergeron receives medical clearance today, expect him to be in the lineup for tonight's Game 7 against the Montreal Canadiens.

"With the quality of player he is, there's no way you can keep a guy like that out," Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien said yesterday. "I wouldn't even consider it."

Getting the green light from the neurologists still is a huge question mark for Bergeron, who has been out since October with post-concussion syndrome.

Whether he plays or not, the Bruins will be looking to change history tonight.

When the Bruins and Habs previously locked horns in a Game 7 on Montreal ice, then-Boston coach Don Cherry was gesturing his hands in the air in exasperation.

On May 10, 1979, Cherry's Bruins were up 4-3 in the final game of their best-of-seven Stanley Cup semi-final series when they were fingered for a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty in the game's waning minutes. Enter Hall of Famer Guy (The Flower) Lafleur, whose blast beat Bruins goalie Gilles Gilbert with only 1:11 left on the clock, sending the game into overtime.

"Only Lafleur could have made that shot in the end," Cherry said yesterday. "It was a screamer. That's what I called it."

Yvon Lambert then beat Gilbert in the extra period, giving the Habs the 5-4 win.

Cherry, who vows to once again be decked out "in Bruins colours" for tonight's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, said Boston will face a tough foe at the Bell Centre tonight.

"If the Bruins win, it will have to come from Square 1," he said. "You can't count your chickens before they're hatched. Carey Price is a very good goalie and I expect him to play well."

So do the Bruins, who never have won a Game 7 on the road.

"We haven't done anything yet," said Game 6 hero Marco Sturm, whose winning goal gave the Bruins a 5-4 victory to tie the series 3-3. "There is still work to do."

The Bruins never have won any of the 20 series in which they had trailed 3-1.
