MONTREAL - John Moore is in hot water with the NHL.

And, for that matter, the Montreal Canadiens.

With the Canadiens leading the Rangers 6-4 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference final Tuesday, the Rangers defenceman delivered a late hit to the head of Montreal’s Dale Weise.

Moore was assessed a five-minute match penalty for elbowing and a game misconduct. The match penalty comes with an automatic suspension pending a review, so don’t be surprised if he misses Game 6 on Thursday, if not a possible Game 7 as well.

Weise, meanwhile, was taken to the quiet room before being given the green light to return to the game, which was won by Montreal 7-4.

“John is not the type of player to (deliberately) hurt someone,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. “But it definitely was a late hit.”

Vigneault’s counterpart, Montreal coach Michel Therrien, said it will be up to the league to decide Moore’s fate.
