New York Rangers winger Dan Carcillo received an automatic 10-game suspension Friday for physical abuse of an official during Game 3 of the NHL Eastern Conference final.
After being assessed a charging penalty in the first period of Thursday’s game, the league said Carcillo “physically applied force” to linesman Scott Driscoll while being escorted to the penalty box. Replays show Carcillo shoving Driscoll while the on-ice official had a hold of his jersey, trying to direct him to the sin bin.
Rule 40.3 on Physical Abuse of Officials, Category II states that, “Any player who deliberately applies physical force to an official in any manner (excluding actions as set out in Category I), which physical force is applied without intent to injure, or who spits on an official, shall be automatically suspended for not less than ten (10) games.”
Carcillo was ejected from the game after the incident.
