When the announcement of the game’s first star echoed through the Bell Centre, the several thousand fans who remained showed a lot of class by giving Martin St. Louis a lengthy ovation.

On this day, it didn’t matter that St. Louis was a member of the opposition.

This was about respecting a player who overcame the burden of a heavy heart to set the tone for his New York Rangers, not only just for Game 1, but perhaps for the entire series.

Just 4:35 into the opening game of the Eastern Conference final, St. Louis beat his Canadian Olympic teammate, Carey Price, to put the Rangers up 1-0. It was a lead they would never relinquish.
